A guest house rather than a hotel

La Villa Desvaux de Marigny is a maison d'hôtes in the proper sense of the term: a private Bordeaux house that receives a handful of guests at a time, with hosts on site rather than a front desk. The period character of the building has been kept, and the scale of the place, three rooms, sets the tone. Arrivals are handled within a defined window in the late afternoon, which tells you how the house is run: personally, not industrially.

Three rooms, adults only

There are three bedrooms. The largest, forty square metres, looks onto the garden and can take a third guest. The second, twenty square metres, has its own balcony. The third is a twenty square metre double. Each comes with a private bathroom and a walk-in shower, and the house is non-smoking throughout. The villa is adults only, which is precisely the point for travellers who come to Bordeaux for a quiet weekend rather than a family holiday.

The garden and the sun terrace

The garden is the reason to book here rather than in the centre. Planted, furnished and extended by a sun terrace, it gives the stay the rhythm of a house: breakfast outside in the mild months, a book in the afternoon, a glass at the end of a day spent walking the city. Very few addresses in Bordeaux offer this at this scale.

Breakfast and the services of the house

Breakfast is served every morning, in the garden when the weather allows. The hosts organise airport transfers, arrange a shuttle on request, rent bicycles, and set up walking tours for guests who want an introduction to the city rather than a map. Housekeeping is daily. Parking is on the street, with a paid public car park close by.

Saint-Seurin, a residential Bordeaux

Rue de Marseille sits west of the historic centre, in the residential streets around Saint-Seurin, where Bordeaux is made of stone houses, small squares and neighbourhood restaurants. Place Gambetta is about fifteen minutes on foot, and from there the golden triangle, the Grand Théâtre and the cathedral follow. Restaurants and bars are within a ten-minute walk, a bus stop is at the door, and Bordeaux-Mérignac airport is a twenty-minute drive.

Why we selected it

The house answers a demand our readers express clearly: a premium stay in Bordeaux that is neither a chain nor a palace, with a garden, a small number of rooms and hosts who know the city. For a couple, or for a traveller who would rather be received than checked in, it is the address we recommend on this side of the centre.
