A Haussmann building, recently reworked

The Burdigala takes its name from the Roman name of Bordeaux, and it occupies a Haussmann style building on rue Georges Bonnac, between Place Gambetta and the Mériadeck quarter. A full renovation moved the house into a contemporary lifestyle register: noble materials, monochrome palettes, and public rooms designed as hybrid spaces where guests read, work and eat rather than pass through. It is now run by Inwood Hotels, and it holds a European Ecolabel certification, which is still uncommon at this level in the city.

Eighty three rooms, including duplex suites

With eighty three rooms and suites the hotel offers a range of layouts that smaller houses cannot match. Rooms are soundproofed and equipped with coffee machines and hypoallergenic bedding, and the duplex suites give two levels of space and a real sense of privacy, which works well for families and for stays of several nights. The tone throughout is calm and low contrast rather than decorative.

Madame B, Bacchus and a cinema room

Madame B is the restaurant and bar of the house, set under a glass roof that can be divided into separate rooms as the evening changes. The cooking stays close to French classics. Bacchus, the wine bar, is the Bordeaux specific part of the offer, with a selection served by the glass and light plates alongside. The hotel also keeps a small private cinema room, which guests can book, and it is a genuinely unusual amenity in the city.

Fitness, wellness and practical comforts

The hotel has a well equipped fitness room and wellness facilities, along with round the clock room service. The detail that matters most in practice is the private garage and car park: driving into central Bordeaux is difficult and parking harder, so a hotel with its own garage changes the shape of a trip that includes vineyard visits in the Médoc, Saint Émilion or the Graves.

Between Gambetta and Mériadeck

The address sits on the western edge of the historic centre. Place Gambetta and the Golden Triangle are a short walk east, with the Grand Théâtre and rue Sainte Catherine just beyond, while the Mériadeck business district and its shopping centre are immediately west. The tram is a few minutes away, and the ring road access that makes the wine country easy to reach is a real advantage of this side of town.

Why we selected it

We retained the Burdigala for travellers who want an upper tier city hotel with room to spread out: generous rooms and duplex suites, a wine bar, a restaurant, a cinema room, a gym and a private garage, in a renovated Haussmann building close to everything. It is a strong choice for a driving trip through the vineyards and for families who need more than one room.
