A family house on the Allées de Tourny

The Hôtel de Sèze stands between Place des Quinconces and the Allées de Tourny, on the promenade that has been the most fashionable address in Bordeaux since the eighteenth century. The house was restored by the same family across two generations, and the style they chose is a revisited classicism: the proportions and mouldings of the period, treated with a contemporary hand rather than reproduced. That continuity of ownership shows in the way the hotel is run.

Fifty five rooms and three suites

The hotel holds fifty five rooms including three suites, a scale that lets it offer a proper restaurant, bar and spa while keeping the service personal. Rooms are arranged around the quiet inner parts of the building as well as the boulevard side, and the suites give the extra space that longer stays and celebrations call for. Guests are known by name, which is the main reason regulars come back.

Le Comptoir de Sèze and the cigar cellar

Le Comptoir de Sèze is the restaurant of the house, bistronomic in intent and listed in the Gault et Millau guide, with rooms that can be privatised for a lunch or a dinner. Alongside it, the bar opens onto a series of salons, a smoking room and a cigar cellar, which is a genuinely rare feature in the city and gives the evening somewhere to go after dinner.

The spa is certified by Spas de France, a label that sets requirements on equipment, protocols and staff training rather than simply on decoration. Treatments must be booked ahead of arrival, which is worth planning for. The hotel also runs a private golf facility reserved for its guests, and holds the Clef Verte environmental certification and the Vignobles et Découvertes label, awarded to addresses that work seriously with the surrounding wine country.

At the centre of the Golden Triangle

The location is one of the best in Bordeaux. Place des Quinconces and its tram lines are at one end of the street, the Grand Théâtre and the shops of the Golden Triangle at the other, and the quays of the Garonne, Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau are within a ten minute walk. The Chartrons wine merchants' quarter lies just north, and the Cité du Vin is a direct tram ride from the Quinconces.
