A landmark facing the Grand Théâtre

Le Grand Hotel occupies the eighteenth century building that closes Place de la Comédie, directly across from the Grand Théâtre. Its colonnaded façade belongs to the classical ensemble that gave Bordeaux its reputation as a city of pale stone, and the hotel has carried the name of the city's grand hotel for generations. The scale is unusual for the historic centre, with thirteen salons and three terraces, and a lobby that behaves like a public room of the city rather than a private lounge.

Rooms and suites signed by Jacques Garcia

The 130 rooms and suites were designed by Jacques Garcia, and his hand is immediately legible: deep colours, heavy fabrics, layered lighting and a sense of stagecraft that answers the theatre outside the windows. Categories run from classic rooms to suites overlooking Place de la Comédie, and the upper floors take in the roofs of the old town. Families and travellers with a dog are both accommodated, which is rare at this level in the city centre.

A Michelin starred table and a rooftop above the old town

Le Pressoir d'Argent Gordon Ramsay is the gastronomic address of the house, a Michelin starred restaurant built around seafood and the produce of the South West. Le Bordeaux, on the square side, works with regional producers and serves a Sunday brunch that locals use as much as guests do. The Rooftop, dressed in a yacht club spirit, opens onto a panoramic view of the skyline, while the Winter Bar l'Orangerie keeps an indoor garden atmosphere for cooler evenings.

Spa Guerlain and wellness

The Guerlain spa gives the hotel its wellness anchor, with facial and body rituals, half day experiences and memberships for regulars. A sauna, a hot tub and a fitness room complete the floor. It is one of the very few spas of this standing inside the historic perimeter, in a city where most wellness addresses sit out among the vineyards.

An address within walking distance of everything

For a first visit to Bordeaux the location is hard to beat. The Grand Théâtre is across the square, the Allées de Tourny and the luxury streets of the Triangle d'Or begin at the door, and rue Sainte Catherine runs south from the same corner. Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau are about ten minutes away along the quays, the Chartrons antique district around fifteen, and the tram stops on the square itself connect to the station and to the Cité du Vin.

Why we selected it

We retained this hotel as the reference grand hotel of Bordeaux: a listed setting, a designer signature, a starred kitchen and a spa of international standing, all at the single most central address in the city. It is the choice for a landmark stay, a celebration, or a first trip where the hotel is meant to be part of the experience rather than a base.
