Four generations in the same house

The Hôtel de Normandie occupies an eighteenth century stone building on the Cours du 30 Juillet, and it has been run by the same family for four generations. That is rare anywhere and rarer still on an address of this quality, and it changes the register of a stay: decisions are made in the house, the staff stay for years, and guests are treated as people who may come back rather than as a booking reference. The building itself belongs to the classical Bordeaux of pale stone, tall windows and wrought iron balconies.

Three categories of rooms

Rooms are organised in three families, from the Classiques through the Grand Confort to the Supérieures, so the house works for a short weekend and for a longer, more comfortable stay. The building's own geometry means no two rooms are quite identical, and the upper floors take in the trees of the Quinconces and the roofs of the Golden Triangle. Dogs are accepted, which matters to travellers who do not want to leave them behind.

Opposite the Maison du Vin

The hotel faces the tourist office and the Maison du Vin de Bordeaux, home of the CIVB and its wine school, which runs tastings and short courses open to visitors. For anyone whose trip is built around wine, being able to cross the street for a first orientation before heading into the Médoc or Saint Émilion is a practical advantage that no vineyard hotel can offer.

Between the Quinconces and the Grand Théâtre

The address sits at the exact hinge of central Bordeaux. Place des Quinconces, the largest square in the city, opens on one side, with its tram lines and its Sunday markets. On the other, the Grand Théâtre, Place Tourny, Place des Grands Hommes and the shops of the Golden Triangle are all within a few minutes on foot, and rue Sainte Catherine runs south from there. The quays and the Miroir d'Eau are a ten minute walk east.

Practical details that matter

The Tourny public car park is about fifty metres away, which solves the usual problem of driving into a historic centre closed to through traffic. The tram from the Quinconces reaches Saint Jean station in roughly ten minutes and the Cité du Vin without a change. The hotel also keeps a small meeting room, useful for guests combining a trip with work.

Why we selected it

We retained the Hôtel de Normandie for travellers who want a classic, independent, family run hotel at the best connected address in Bordeaux, with the wine school across the road and the Grand Théâtre around the corner. It is the sensible base for a first visit, for a wine focused trip, and for anyone who values continuity of ownership over facilities lists.
